David Karp is an American entrepreneur best known as the founder and longtime chief executive of the blogging platform Tumblr. He started out without a high school diploma, interning for Fred Seibert at the animation house Frederator Studios, where he built the company's first blogging tool and created, wrote and edited its online video channel, Channel Frederator. He next worked at the parenting forum UrbanBaby until CNET bought it in 2006, then set up his own software consultancy, Davidville, partnering with engineer Marco Arment on client projects. During a lull between contracts the pair began building a short-form blogging service, which went live as Tumblr in February 2007 and grew to host hundreds of millions of blogs. BusinessWeek named Karp its best young tech entrepreneur in 2009, and MIT Technology Review put him on its TR35 list of top innovators under 35 the following year. Yahoo! agreed to acquire Tumblr in May 2013, with Karp staying on as CEO until he announced his departure in November 2017.
